DECONTAMINATION

FRA-BER GUIDES

CHEMICAL DECONTAMINATION.

Pre-wash and washing cannot always remove all contaminants.
Some of these contaminants, like iron and tar particles, have the ability to penetrate into the pores of the paint and therefore require specific action to obtain a perfect surface.

FERROUS PARTICLE/RUST DECONTAMINATION.

  1. Spray the D1 Iron product evenly on the surface.
  2. Leave the detergent to work. A change in the colour of the product indicates that it is effectively acting on the iron particles present.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water, avoiding that the product dries on the surface.

GLUE AND TAR DECONTAMINATION.

  1. Spray the D3 Tar product evenly on the surface.
  2. Leave the detergent to work for 2 or 3 minutes. The glue and/or tar stains will begin to break up. Use a sponge or microfibre (we recommend Micron HD) for persistent dirt.
  3. Clean the vehicle with a cloth and rinse thoroughly with water, avoiding that the product dries on the surface.

LIMESTONE OR ACID RAIN DECONTAMINATION.

  1. Spray the DS Scale product evenly on the surface, proceeding in sections.
  2. Use a Micron wash mitt or a cotton disc to help remove and dissolve dirt.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water, avoiding that the product dries on the surface.

Recommendations:

  • Do not let the product remain on glass for a long time.
  • It is advisable to use the product about every 3 washes as a foam shampoo to maintain the sealant (for example SC1 Sealant or SC0 Hydro sealant).

WHAT ABOUT AFTER DECONTAMINATION?

It’s time to use clay bar!
Clay bar is used to remove all those impurities still present on the surface, even if they are not visible to the naked eye. In the case of simple washing, it may be useful to add a layer of sealant or wax (SC0 Hydro Sealant) or use a fast cleaner (W1 Quick Detailer) to increase shine and intensity.

FOR WHAT (AND WHERE) DO I USE CLAY BAR?

Passing clay bar over paint lets you remove all impurities present after washing (not removing scratches or marks from the paint, as is often thought). The achieved result will be a perfectly smooth surface.
Clay bar can be used on all smooth surfaces (glass, headlights, rims). Not to be used instead on surfaces like seals, uncoated plastics, etc.

HOW MUCH AND WHEN?

Clay bar should be used a couple of times a year or wherever there are particular cleaning problems on paint. The plastic bag test is an excellent way to understand if a surface need to be decontaminated:

  1. Wash the vehicle.
  2. Take a plastic bag, like those used in the kitchen for food storage, to use it as a “glove”.
  3. Rub the surface to be analysed with your fingertips.
  4. If we find a rough surface, it’s time to use clay bar!

CLAY BAR: HOW DO I USE IT?

  1. Choose the best Fra-Ber clay bar.
Clay Tech red (average/hard) is the best solution in 90% of situations thanks to its cleaning capacity. There are however cases, such as for use on historic vehicles and particularly delicate paints, in which the more delicate action Clay Tech blue is recommended.
  2. Wash and dry the vehicle.
  3. Wet with lubricant (Dl Lube) and flatten the clay bar with your hands.
  4. Work in small sections, about 40 X 40 cm at a time, spraying the clay lubricant evenly on the work surface-
  5. Spray the lubricant also on the clay bar and gently move it over the work surface with overlapping coats. Repeated coats may be necessary with particularly stubborn impurities. Try to remodel the clay to keep the surface fresh and dry.
  6. Continue to work on the same area until all impurities have been removed. The clay will flow smoothly on the surface when excellent results have been achieved.
  7. Remove excess lubricant with a microfibre cloth.
  8. Repeat from points 3 to 6 until the entire vehicle has been suitably processed with clay.
  9. Once the work is finished, put away the clay bar and spray it with lubricant in order to keep it soft and flexible.
  10. Then proceed with fast washing of the vehicle before polishing it and applying sealant.
